What is Riverland?

La Mer would have bagged it effortlessly if there were an award for the most Instagrammable location. La Mer is a stunningly beautiful beachfront in Dubai sandwiched between Pearl Jumeirah and Jumeirah Bay, the latter of which is undergoing development. The inspiration for its unique design is from the wreckage and flotsams that one typically sees on deserted beaches.

Funnily enough, La Mer literally means the beach in the French language. But there is yet another beachfront destination by Meraas called ‘The Beach’.

La Mer by Meraas is so much more than just a beachfront. You can spend a whole day simply roaming around on this beach, looking at all the murals and artworks sprinkled across it. The beachfront has some similarities to The Beach in JBR. 

What makes La Mer stand out

There are numerous beaches in Dubai. There are luxurious public beaches embellished with facilities and waiters to serve you. But they all require you to pay an entry fee. If you want to spend a day on a budget, public beaches are where you should go. So La Mer is the place to go if you don’t want to pay to enjoy the beach.

Phase 1 of the development, called La Mer South, was opened back in 2017. Phase 2, also called La Mer North, was completed only in 2018. The Wharf, another part of La Mer, took a few more months to complete.

North and South La Mers don’t have any significant difference, but they are visibly separated by the portion projecting into the sea.

The La Mer North houses its resident water theme park, the Laguna. It is presently smaller than other water parks in Dubai, such as the Wild Wadi or Aquaventure. But Laguna water park is still undergoing expansion. La Mer North also has the Roxy Cinema House.

La Mer beach is a great spot to dip in seawater. There are free showers on the beach, and you can rent the surfing board if you want.

Hawa Hawa

Hawa is a one-of-a-kind playground in Dubai. Hawa Hawa’s concept of an inflatable playground is borrowed from Japanese culture. It is a new take on the regular trampoline park. In La Mer, there are two of these in different sizes. One for the kids and the other for the grown-ups. Yep, Hawa Hawa is a place to enjoy even for older people.

Jumping up and down is a safe and efficient form of exercise. The park is also safe enough for kids to play unassisted by the parents. The playground has a total area of 1800 square meters to fit many people at the same time.

The Wharf – La Mer

The whole La Mer looks like it was born out of an artist’s mind. There are places with beautiful murals and eclectic art pieces throughout the beach. But The Wharf is even more so. The Wharf looks straight out of a dystopian novel full of steel cans, old and battered trucks, and rustic types of machinery lying here and there. Like everyone left there a hundred years ago in a hurry. But all of them are brightly colored. Making this place the most photogenic place in La Mer.

Laguna Water Park – La Mer

Laguna park, which is right in the middle of the beachfront, is a part of La Mer north. The park sits on a piece of land reclaimed from the sea. It juts out to the sea in a near-circular shape. The park looks beautiful and is gracefully laid out on the beach.

There are some daring adventure rides in the park. The Free Fall is for those with some nerve. It’ll open the trap door beneath your feet when you least expect it and take you down a steep waterslide several feet below to the landing pool. The Loop is similar to the free fall but with a different flavor. It takes you through a long winding tunnel at crazy speeds. 

The WavePoolOz is the first-ever 180-degree surf pool in the middle east and one of only three in the world. You can perform more tricks in this surf pool than a regular straight surf pool. 

Apart from the adventurous ones, there are also areas to relax and unwind. Just float in the lazy river, lie down in the cabanas, or sunbathe on the beach. 

Although entry to La Mer is free, you have to pay to go inside the water park. One main reason to choose Laguna over other water parks is its proximity to the restaurants and hotels in La Mer. Another is the spectacular view of the beach. Water parks are the best places to visit in Dubai during the height of summer.

The Water Canal has created a new opportunity for tourists to enjoy the attractions. Dubai water canal also cuts through the busiest financial district in Dubai — the Business Bay. The million-dollar bridge in the famous seven-lane highway in Dubai was a part of this canal. Dubai ferry makes the proper use of this opportunity by extending their route to the new canal, although it has existed even before the channel.

What is the Dubai Ferry service?

Dubai ferry is more of a tourist attraction like the dhows than a regular transport. The fact that its route encompasses all the scenic locations of Dubai and the comfort and facilities in the ferry is because of this. The ferry features a unique design and has shops and snack bars inside.

It was 2011 when the ferry first started service. Since then, it has expanded to newer routes and has improved features and facilities. The most notable addition was the recent opening of the Dubai water canal, which has added routes that provide beautiful views that haven’t been accessible from the water before. It is also easily the longest waterway in Dubai.

You can also choose to go to any of the two classes. The gold class gives you seating towards the front of the boat, where you can get a panoramic view through the large window. Large LCD screens onboard display exciting facts about the attractions you see along the way. There are restrooms for men and women. You can even get souvenirs from the onboard shops.

Dubai Sharjah Ferry Timings

Dubai Sharjah ferry has different timings for the weekends. On weekdays, you can catch a ferry ride from Al Ghubaiba or Sharjah Aquarium marina station every 30 minutes. On Fridays, the frequency becomes once every hour. But it reverts to 30 minutes intervals on Saturdays but with some changes in the first trip time and last trip time. The ride between Al Ghubaiba and Sharjah takes 35 minutes. 

How to book Dubai Ferry

There is an online booking facility for the ferry. But unless you are a large group of people who want to travel together, you don’t have to book in advance. You can go with your NOL card and travel on the ferry as you would in any other public transport in Dubai.

Booking online is a better option if you are not using the NOL card. The line in front of the ticket kiosk can be quite long, especially on the weekends.

Currently, there are five ferry stations in operation in Dubai. They are:

• Dubai Marina
• Dubai Canal
• Sheikh Zayed road station
• Al Jaddaf

Best free beaches to visit in Dubai

So, which beach should you go to? Why not all of them? OK, which one should you visit first? Here is a list of public beaches in Dubai ranked from bottom to top.

7. Sunset beach (Umm Suqeim Beach)

This beach offers a fantastic view of the Burj al Arab. Umm Suqueim beach is a place to enjoy the sunset with the iconic luxury hotel in the background. The beach is in front of the Umm Suqeim park

Sunset beach is called so because there are two large light posts on the beach which lets you swim even after sunset. These lamp posts powered by solar panels turn on automatically with the nightfall. This is the only beach in Dubai where you can swim after sunset until midnight.

But night swimming is not allowed everywhere at the beach. 125 meters long area along the sea is lit 30 meters into the sea. You are only allowed to swim in this illuminated part. When the time for swimming is over, lamps switch off on their own, which signals that everyone should get out of the water.

Sunset is the best time to visit the beach. But despite the location, it does not get too crowded.

Facilities on the beach

There are some other facilities on the beach as well. There are restaurants, toilets, shower rooms, changing rooms, and toilets on the beach. Another cool thing about the beach is that it has a beach library. You don’t have to bring your own book if you want to sunbath while reading. Instead, you can choose from the collection of books in the library. You don’t have to pay a penny to read them. If you don’t want to read on the beach beds, that’s fine too. Get one of those bean bag chairs near the library.

It is easy to find the Sunset beach because of its location near the Burj al Arab hotel and Wild Wadi water theme park. You need not bring water or snacks to the beach because you have shops all over the beach to buy them. Though the parking lots are scarce near the beach, you can easily get to the beach on public transport or taxi.

6.Black Palace beach 

The Black Palace beach is known by other names, including the secret beach and Al Sufouh beach. The main attraction of the beach is that it is never busy. During some times of the day, you may find yourself and only a few others on the beach.

The beach sits between a cluster of royal palaces and a line of date palms that only leaves a small entrance to the beach. The entrance to the beach is something that’s easily missed if you are not looking for it. There are no large sign boards to show the way.

The downside is that there aren’t any facilities on the beach. No restaurants, no shops, no toilets. That’s also the reason why tourists do not frequent here as they do in other places. There is a lifeguard post, though. 

Black palace beach offers a great escape for a romantic evening. You can easily find a spot where you will have privacy and can enjoy the sunset with your partner.

Facilities on the beach

Nor are there any water sports options on the beach. The water here is shallow, which makes it unsuitable for water sports. But that has another advantage. You can bathe in the water even if you don’t know how to swim. Even kids can go a little into the sea.

When you come to spend time at the secret beach, be sure to bring your own snacks and water. Also, there are no changing rooms. So if you plan to swim, then bring a large towel with you. Al Sufouh Beach is a great place to spend time with family. Even though facilities on the beach are less, it’s the privacy that attracts the people 

One more excellent thing about the beach is that you can enjoy the views of many landmarks of Dubai at once. The beach is in the middle of the Burj al Arab and the palm island. That means no matter which direction you look, the view is great. You can even see Ain Dubai, which is on the Bluewaters island near the horizon, although tiny.

Getting to this beach, but is not easy. You will still have to walk more than a kilometer even if you take the public bus to the nearest stop. There is no metro access, either. So you will be better off if you come in your own car or a taxi.

5. Jumeirah beach

The water sports capital in Dubai. Because Jumeirah beach is 7 kilometers long, there is enough space for all kinds of entertainment to exist side by side. From jet skiing, kite surfing and parasailing, whatever sports you are into, Jumeirah has it. There are spaces allocated for beach volleyball and football.

This is the most visited beach in Dubai. Jumeirah Beach is popular among both the residents of Dubai and the tourists. But during the tourist season in Dubai, it will be mostly tourists. The Jumeirah beach is also next to Burj Al Arab but on the opposite side of the Umm Suqeim beach. The beach extends from the iconic hotel to the Palm Jumeirah island.

Facilities on the beach

There are some world-class restaurants and resorts along the beach. These restaurants bring cuisines from different parts of the world to one neighborhood. There is a rubberized jogging track, to excite the runners.

Apart from the fun, there are places near the beach to learn about the heritage and history of Dubai. Jumeirah Mosque, famed for its beauty, offers guided tour of the mosque for Muslims and non-Muslims. The guided tours are conducted by Sheikh Muhammad Center for Cultural Understanding, which aims at bringing an open conversation between different cultures.

Jumeirah Beach Park is an excellent place for children to spend time. The park has undergone renovations in the past year, making it even better than before for families. Furthermore, Wild Wadi water theme park is right next to the beach. 

Jumeirah beach, being right in the middle of the old and new Dubai, has great accessibility from both sides. The area near Jumeirah beach is surrounded by upscale residences, hotels, and resorts. The beach is just walking distance away from Burj Al Arab.

If you are looking for some quiet time on the beach, Jumeirah is not the place because of the crowd. But even then, if you come here early in the morning, you will find it nearly empty. But the crowd grows steadily over the day until sunset, after which people are not allowed to be in the sea.

4. Mamzar beach

The most popular beach among the expats in the UAE. Mamzar beach is, in fact, five beaches joined together; Nouras, Sadaf, Murjan, Flamingo, and Danah.

There is an amazing park on the beach that covers an area of over one hundred hectares. Because the park is so vast, you will need to get on the park train if you want to see inside. 

Facilities on the beach

Although the beach is free, the park has a nominal entry fee. The park is pretty green replete with play area and arcade games center for kids and green grass for grown ups to laze. There is also a virtual learning center aimed at children. 

There is a small skate park, ample toilets, showers, shade umbrellas, eateries and upscale beach cabins. To increase the quality of the air, the buildings on the beach uses special paints that reduce air pollution and absorb carbon dioxide.

Snorkeling and swimming are great activities to consider when you visit Mamzar. You can even swim in the pool inside the park. The areas where kids can swim are marked separately.

Mamzar beach park is a nice place to picnic. There are barbecue spots and charging stations that harvest energy from the sun. You can charge your phone wirelessly on the smart park benches.

The beach is located near Sharjah. Therefore, a lot of Sharjah residents come here during weekends. You won’t see many tourists here. One downside of Mamzar is that there are no metro stations nearby. The closest one to the beach is Al Qiyadah, from where you can take a bus. It can be quite crowded in the evening, especially on weekends.

3. Kite Beach

Another beach located just off of Jumeirah street. Kite beach offers a slew of water sports facilities. This beach is particularly famed for kitesurfing and hence the name. Besides that, there are many other attractions on the beach. Food trucks are a big thing on the beach. You can see a whole bunch of them with enough varieties to satiate your taste buds. 

Facilities on the beach

Kite beach is a wheelchair friendly place. It was the first beach to be made easier for people of determination to come and visit. There are fitness areas on the beach with some basic work out machines by Magnum. They offer training sessions in martial arts which is not free.

There is a small beach library that stands solitary near the boardwalk. You can borrow a book from here for free. On weekends, the sky is dotted with bright colors of kites, and you can see people dangling beneath it on their boards. There is a special area only for kitesurfing.

This beach is a nice place to visit every now and then if you are a fitness enthusiast. Apart from the work out machine, there are separate tracks for joggers and cyclists with distance markers. The tracks stretch for fourteen kilometers along the beach.

The uniquely-Meraas Instagram worthy locations are present here as well, although, not so abundant as in La Mer. There is a small yet pretty water theme park on the beach called Splash n Pretty. The skate park, but is more suitable for beginner skateboarders. Adventurous minds will like the obstacle course on the beach.

Kite beach is right in the middle of being busy or quiet. Even though a lot of people come here, you will be able to find a comfortable place for yourself. 

A fun thing to try if you have a flair for overtly adventurous things is bungee swing. It is totally safe for anyone who is above the age of 10 and does not have any severe physical ailments. Xpark Jr is a safe and fun play area for kids where they can climb over things and explore on their own. 

2. La Mer 

In french, la Mer means ‘the beach’. But in reality, it’s so much more than a beach. It can be better described as an entertainment and shopping district by the sea. It is also a fairly new addition to the list of attractive beaches in Dubai.

Facilities on the beach

There is an innovative inflatable bounce park Hawa Hawa for younger kids. The design of this park ensures safety without compromising fun. 

As the Jumeirah beach has Wild Wadi, La Mer has Laguna water park. The water park, like the rest of La Mer is fairly new and a bit smaller in comparison to other water parks in Dubai. The park is still expanding. Usually, wave simulators in parks are in just one direction. But Laguna water park has taken it to the next level with a 180-degree wave simulator, which is one of the only three in the world. The park also has some cool slides and rivers worth checking out.

La Mer is a place for shopping and eating out. There are all kinds of branded shops and retail outlets. La Mer has two parts — North and South. Though that doesn’t mean much, that’s a thing. Other sections of the beach have names as well. Because the beach is so large and full of shops that look almost similar, these names help you navigate through the beach.

The beach and everything in it are so modern. There are murals on the walls, and modern art sculptures sprinkled throughout the beach for the younger generation who love social media. OK. That is not romantic at all. That’s like the Grand Central Station on a Thursday afternoon.

But I am going to pass on that untold information to you now. There is a secret beach in Dubai where the crowd will be sparse even when the weather is great. Despite the prime location and amazing views from the beach, not many people even know that such a beach exists in Dubai.

The Black Palace Beach

Aka the Secret Beach

Tucked between a long array of Royal Palaces, there is the Al Sufouh beach, which is also called the Black Palace beach. Because the beach is hiding in plain sight, some also call it ‘The Secret Beach’.

The entrance to this beach is barely noticeable and can be easily missed if you are not really looking for it. There are no large sign boards or any significant landmark near the access point. Furthermore, long rows of palm trees hide the beach, leaving only a small gap in the middle for the entrance.

What is the best thing about this beach? The answer depends on whom you ask and can often be polarising. Some say it is the view. Located right between the iconic sail-shaped symbol of luxury, the Burj Al Arab and the man-made wonder, the Palm Jumeirah, you have magnificent scenery from the beach regardless of where you look.

Others say it is the privacy that draws them to the beach. That’s true too. This place never gets crowded. In fact, some times, it will be just you and a few other people on the beach. The pristine white sand of the beach that stretches for two and a half kilometers is ideal to have a mosey around. You can easily find a comfortable spot with privacy even on the busiest days. Swimming is another excellent activity to do on the beach, even for children. Because it is shallow, you can safely take the younger ones into the water. There are also some nice spots for beach volleyball and football.

In reality, it is the combination of both that brings people to the Black Palace beach even though it does not boast any typical tourist attraction.

Things to know before you visit the Secret Beach

But there is a catch to all of these. There are no restaurants, shower rooms, or toilets on the beach. So when you come here, it is a good idea to take water and snacks with you. 

There are no facilities for water sports on the beach. The shallow waters are not suitable for any of those either. Nonetheless, the water is crystal clear, and underwater visibility is great. Swim around and explore the underwater views with only a snorkel. You won’t find any snorkel gear rental here, so you will have to bring your own. You are allowed to swim in the water until sunset.

Only a few tourists actually know about this place. Therefore, most people that come here are expats on their evening day out with their families. Some time ago, there was not even a lifeguard on this beach. But now the authorities have set up a lifeguard post. The place is lacking in every other amenity, though. This is the main reason why there aren’t many tourists here in the first place. 

If all you want is a peaceful time enjoying the beach vibe and to spend time quality time with the family, this secret beach in Dubai is a great choice. Not to mention the stunning views of Palm Island and Burj Al Arab. There seem to be future plans by the authorities to develop this area into another tourist attraction like La Mer. But for the time being, this remains a hidden gem in Dubai. Other than Al Sufouh beach, a beach less crowded than most others but with a little more facilities is the Mercato beach.

Other than meandering on the beaches, another way to experience the beauty and tranquility of the sea is to go to the deep waters on a yacht. There are several options to rent a yacht. How to reach Al Sufouh Beach

If you are in a car, you should drive south through the Al Sufouh road. You will find the entrance to the beach on your right side after a series of palaces that lie on the coast. One thing you should be careful is that the access to the beach is a narrow sandy path between the line of palm trees. If you do not look carefully, you will definitely miss it. And if you miss that exit, you will have to go all the way around again for two kilometers.

Dos and Don’ts on the beaches in Dubai

• Don’t wear the beach wears outside the beach area. Don’t walk in the streets with your swimming trunks either.
• Even when you are on the beach, wear clothes that offer a little more coverage than what you would wear in the west. Also, don’t change in public view. When there are no changing stations nearby, use the cover of a large towel.
• Some beaches have one day in the week as ladies’ day. On those days, men are not allowed on the beaches without families.
• Public display of affection is not allowed anywhere.
• Alcohol consumption in public is illegal and can get you arrested.
• Littering the beaches is punishable. It is an easy way to get fined.
• Don’t take pictures of other beach-goers.
• Fishing is only allowed in certain locations. Moreover, you are must have a license to fish in Dubai.
